ecoWhy "Tomatl"?

The word tomatl [ˈtomat͡ɬ] is the original Nahuatl — the language of the Aztec peoples of Mesoamerica — from which every modern language got its word for tomato. Spanish colonizers heard the Nahuatl word and rendered it as tomate; English borrowed it and modified the spelling to tomato, partly under the influence of the earlier loanword potato.

The word breaks down as tom- from tomohuac meaning "fat" or "swelling," and atl meaning "water" — together roughly "fat water" or "the swelling fruit." When Aztec farmers cultivated the Andean fruit to be larger, sweeter, and red, they distinguished it as xitomatl — "plump with navel." The Nahuatl dictionary documents tomatl in use at least as early as 1532.

We use the original word here as a small acknowledgment of where the tomato — and the Pomodoro timer's namesake fruit — actually comes from.

timerThe Pomodoro Technique

Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s using a tomato-shaped kitchen timer, the method alternates focused work intervals with short rest breaks. The classic rhythm is 25 minutes of focused work, a 5-minute break, and a longer 15–30 minute rest after every four sessions.

A 2025 scoping review in BMC Medical Education found that structured Pomodoro interventions consistently improved focus, reduced mental fatigue, and enhanced sustained task performance compared to self-paced breaks. A study of 94 university students found Pomodoro users maintained higher concentration and motivation throughout their sessions.

Noise colors describe how a sound's energy is distributed across frequencies. White, pink, and brown are the most clinically studied. The others have less formal research but are widely used. Two colors — Blue and Violet — have their sliders capped at lower maximum volumes due to high-frequency fatigue risk (see individual notes).

White Noise
Equal energy at every frequency. Best for masking sudden, unpredictable sounds — voices, door slams, keyboard. The broadest masker. Nature analog: TV static, whirring fan.
Grey Noise
Shaped so every frequency sounds equally loud to human ears — perceptually flat even though mathematically it isn't. Smoother and gentler than white. Nature analog: stream tumbling over rocks.
Pink Noise
Falls 3 dB per octave — equal energy per octave, matching human perception. The most studied noise for sustained focus and sleep. Gentler on ears over long sessions. Nature analog: steady rainfall, light wind.
Brown / Red Noise
Falls 6 dB per octave — bass-heavy, deep rumble. Strong for deep focus and blocking low-frequency noise (HVAC, traffic). Frequently recommended for ADHD. Nature analog: heavy waterfall, crashing ocean waves.
Yellow Noise
Mid-frequency emphasis around 200–800 Hz — warm, enveloping. Good for relaxation and gentle focus. Not standardized like white/pink/brown. Nature analog: airplane cabin hum, seashell.
Green Noise
Mid-spectrum centered (~500 Hz). Softer than white, less deep than brown. Nature-ambient feel. Limited formal research. Nature analog: rustling leaves, flowing river.
Blue Noise
Rises 3 dB per octave — emphasizes higher frequencies. Promotes alertness rather than calm. Best in shorter sessions (20–45 min); more fatiguing than pink or brown at equivalent volumes. Volume capped at a conservative maximum. Nature analog: garden hose spray, steam.

Violet / Purple Noise
